Illustration for the KIAS Webzine HORIZON:
“The Magic of Graphene Moiré Patterns”
This artwork visualizes the unique phenomenon that occurs in the electronic energy structure of graphene when the rotational angle between two graphene layers reaches precisely 1.05 degrees.
As the hexagonal lattices of each layer are slightly misaligned, a new large-scale moiré pattern emerges at regular intervals.
The piece highlights this layered interaction—where the subtle twist creates a surprising and complex visual and physical effect—symbolizing the “magic angle” that unlocks novel quantum behaviors in graphene.
